How We Use Rewards at School
Rewards and consequences are important for helping us become independent learners who are ready for adult life. They help improve our behaviour and are a big part of growing up. As we work together, it’s important that we have a fair way to reward good behaviour and deal with any issues.
At Minerva May School, we promise to:
Monitor Behaviour: We keep track of how we behave and make sure to record it properly.
Teach Right from Wrong: We learn what good behaviour looks like.
Promote Anti-Bullying: We know it’s important to stand up against bullying and create a friendly environment for everyone.
Encourage Positive Behaviour: We support self-discipline and respect for ourselves and each other.
Take Action Against Bullying: If we see or hear about bullying, we take steps to stop it. Our Anti-Bullying and Safeguarding policies explain how we deal with these situations, even outside of school.
Address Discrimination: We respond to any unfair treatment based on race, gender, or identity and keep track of these incidents.
Clear Routines, Structure, and Praise
Our supportive atmosphere at Minerva May School is built on clear routines, structure, and praise. We focus on recognising and celebrating positive behaviour. Here are some ways we might receive praise:
Weekly point sheets
Verbal praise and positive comments in our work
Notes or ‘praise’ postcards sent home to our parents
Special mentions in class or assembly
Communication with our parents about our contributions to school life
Displaying our good work in classrooms and hallways
Commendations from the Head Teacher
Opportunities for roles of responsibility
Certificates for being Student of the Week
Our Minerva May Learning Awards
Our Minerva May Learning Awards are fun ways to encourage and reward our good behaviour. In each lesson, we can earn “Effort for Learning” (EfL) points and “Behaviour for Learning” (BfL) points throughout the school day.
On a scale from zero to five—where zero means not so good and five means excellent—we can earn EfL points for trying hard and BfL points for showing good behaviour.
Our teachers or Learning and Pastoral Support (LPS) staff will record these points using our Behaviour Management tool. They will also write down why we earned the points so we and our parents can see how we’re doing.
Teachers will keep track of our points all week, and the totals will be sent home at the end of each week. These points add up over time and help us earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold Minerva May Learning Awards at the end of each term.
